Rabbits Need Vaccines Too!

Just like Dogs and Cats, Rabbits need vaccines too!

At Clontarf Veterinary Hospital we like our other branches in Anicare Veterinary Group are delighted to be seeing more rabbits in our clinic each day. Rabbits are increasingly becoming the pet of choice for many people.

But it is important to know not only how best to feed or look after your rabbit but also to how best protect your pet from deadly disease.

Myxomatosis and Viral Haemorrhagic Disease are two potentially life threatening diseases that you can vaccinate your rabbit against.

Myxomatosis is spread by direct contact between rabbits but it is also spread by insects such as fleas – so your rabbit does not have to be in direct contact with another rabbit to be at risk.

Viral Haemorrhagic  Disease is a more recent disease than myxomatosis being reported in Europe only in 1992. It is spread by direct contact between rabbits or through contaminated surfaces such as bedding , hutches and clothing. This means both indoor and outdoor rabbits are at risk.

Vaccination against these life threatening diseases is now available.

Just one injection given from 5 weeks of age onward will help provide protection against these awful diseases.
