Household Dangers

Pet Proofing your Home
Dublin vets know you ”childproof” your home but so too you should you Pet Proof” your home to make it safe for your four-legged family members. Cats and dogs just like small children are naturally curious and love to explore their environment with their paws, claws and mouths. But they can’t know what is dangerous and what is not – more over unlike humans they do not become less curious or more careful as they get older. The following tips from Anicare’s Clontarf Veterinary Hospital can help ensure that your pet enjoys a long, happy and accident-free life in your care.

About the house

Prevent falls by screening windows and so not let young pets out on balconies, upper porches or high decks.

Many house plants, including dieffenbachia, elephant ear, spider plants and more are poisonous if eaten. Remove them or put them out of reach in hanging baskets.

Puppies & kittens love to chew when they’re teething, so unplug, remove or cover electrical cords.

Don’t leave a room where a fire is lit or a space where a heater is being used unattended.

Plastic bags may be fun to play with, but they can suffocate.

If your pet can put something in his mouth, he probably will. So don’t leave small, sharp, easily swallowed objects lying around.

In the garage

Cats enjoy naps near a warm engine so, before you drive off, honk your horn and make sure your pet is not under or near the car.

Pets like the smell and taste of antifreeze and windshield washer. Tightly cover their containers and wipe up any spills.

Paint, gasoline and other dangerous chemicals should be stored out of reach.

In the kitchen, laundry room & bathroom

Never leave burners or irons on unattended.

Dangerous household chemicals such as bleach and ammonia should be stored out of your pet’s reach.

Close washer and dryer lids – your pet might climb in and become trapped.

Keep toilet lids down – small pets can actually drown, if they fall in.

Medicines, shampoo, suntan lotions and other personal care items can kill your pet. Make sure she can’t get hold of them.

Outdoors

Some outdoor plants, like ivy and oleander, can be poisonous to pets.

Keep pets away from lawns and gardens treated with chemicals.

Store garden tools and chemicals securely. Keep garden sheds locked.

Remember some chemical especially slug bait is poisonous to pets.

And lastly Anicare Dublin vets ask you to remember the festive season. Christmas provides many more hazards with tinsel. Xmas tree lights and glass decorations will all tempt your pets curiosity but could be lethal chewed or swallowed. Also mistletoe and Holly are poisonous to pets.
So we at Clontarf veterinary Hospital hope these tips help keep the home of our clients from Malahide to Marino and from Donebate to Donneycarney safe for all our four legged family friends

Recently we made the decision to get a new kitten but we already had a ten year old cat called Goose. So before making the decision to add to our feline family we had a little thinking to do. We wanted to be sure the two would get along together and become the best of friends. To help with this we made plans about how we were going to slowly introduce them to each other. We have a spare room which we used for Andi (our new kitten) to stay and play in. This gave Goose some space and freedom to relax away from the hyperactive youngster. It also gave Goose time to get used to the idea of a new feline companion. I was lucky enough that I could take her into work at Clontarf Veterinary Clinic each day home and back home in the evening. This meant we were able to slowly introduce them to each other. We would let them see each other for just a few minutes and then for longer periods building it up over the evenings and weekends. When Andi was not with Goose we would leave her blanket in Goose’s bed. So he could smell her and know her smell the next time he saw her. Now after just a few weeks together they are becoming the best of friends and spend most of their time together. However like any young kitten she can have still have her mad moments when with a burst of energy and she runs around like a mad thing and wants Goose to join in the fun. Sometimes he is not in the mood for that so we just put her in her ‘play’ with all her toys where she can expel some of her boundless energy whilst leaving ‘the old man’ in peace.

It took a little time to get them on a level grounding but now they are the best of mates. Goose has a new lease of life keeping fit playing with Andi. And then when all the games are over they relax and groom each other –best of friends!

Not letting the cat out of the bag might be one thing but getting the cat into the bag or carrier in the first place is quite another!

It is true that cats especially indoor cats can put up quite a fuss when trying to get them into a carrier.

For many cats the production of the cat carrier usually means a trip to the vets – so they are often not too keen to get into it.

But a trip to the vet does not have to be a trauma!

Here are some of Clontarf Veterinary Hospital’s tips

Choose your carrier carefully. There are lots on the market but one where the top can come off completely can make entry and exit less of a struggle.

Use the base at home as a comfort spot for your cat – fit it out with a comfy blanket to encourage your cat to use it.

Feed your cat treats inside your carrier.

Before your trip make a cosy bed in the carrier with familiar items and smells.

Give your cat time to get accustomed to a new carrier.

Leave the door open and encourage your cat to sleep in it

If you have two cats better to use separate carriers – even the best of friends can fall out when they are feeling a little stressed.

Use feliway available at Anicare Clontarf a synthetic feline pheromone that is calming to most cats – it can be sprayed or wiped onto the carrier prior to the trip for added comfort

      Still having problems?

(a) Place the carrier on its end

(b) Pick up the cat with one hand placed under its front legs and the other hand supporting its bottom.

(c) Tail goes in first

(d) Tilt the cat so that when the torso is released it can only go into the carrier

(e) Close the door and secure the latch

(f) Slowly lay the carrier down in the correct position

Lastly – would you like to to see how it’s done then just go to Anicare Veterinary Group Facebook page

https://www.facebook.com/anicareveterinarygroup

and watch Clontarf Veterinary Hospital’s nurse Maeve Deady’s lastest ‘How To Video’ and she will show you just how to get your cat into its’s basket!

No dog or cat owner would disagree their pet adds an extra dimension to their life:
whether it’s companionship, the fun element or simply a friendly soul with whom to
share their life. However, one thing no pet owner would want to share are parasites!

Parasites such as fleas, ticks and intestinal worms can cause discomfort to their pet
host, but perhaps more serious they can cause fatal diseases such as Lungworm
which can be life-threatening to dogs. It really is a jungle out there, but thankfully there
are safety measures you can take.

Clontarf Veterinary Hospital and all Anicare Veterinary Group branches has a comprehensive range of parasite treatments, which will help to keep your pet parasite – free. Moreover, we can advise you about your pet’s individual parasite
requirements based on its individual life – style and the parasites – both internal and
external – to which it is susceptible.

Just call our team in Clontarf on 01 8330744 now to make a Free Veterinary Nurse appointment to help you …

Just like Dogs and Cats, Rabbits need vaccines too!

At Clontarf Veterinary Hospital we like our other branches in Anicare Veterinary Group are delighted to be seeing more rabbits in our clinic each day. Rabbits are increasingly becoming the pet of choice for many people.

But it is important to know not only how best to feed or look after your rabbit but also to how best protect your pet from deadly disease.

Myxomatosis and Viral Haemorrhagic Disease are two potentially life threatening diseases that you can vaccinate your rabbit against.

Myxomatosis is spread by direct contact between rabbits but it is also spread by insects such as fleas – so your rabbit does not have to be in direct contact with another rabbit to be at risk.

Viral Haemorrhagic Disease is a more recent disease than myxomatosis being reported in Europe only in 1992. It is spread by direct contact between rabbits or through contaminated surfaces such as bedding , hutches and clothing. This means both indoor and outdoor rabbits are at risk.

Vaccination against these life threatening diseases is now available.

Just one injection given from 5 weeks of age onward will help provide protection against these awful diseases.

Should you have any questions or queries please call our Clontarf Hospital @ 01 8330744 or any of our other Anicare Branches .
