Acupuncture
Acupuncture may be used to successfully treat a number of conditions in companion animals. It is most useful in the treatment of musculoskeletal problems including arthritis and intervertebral disc problems, a common cause of back pain in dogs. It may be used alongside medication, surgery and/or physiotherapy and hydrotherapy and may provide important additional pain relief for our patients.

Acupuncture involves inserting needles into specific points in the body to achieve a healing effect. It works through the nervous system. The needles block the pain messages and encourage the brain and central nervous system to produce more of the body’s natural painkillers. In conditions that are not painful, acupuncture may help to reset the body’s normal way of functioning.  The Western application of acupuncture is used predominantly in the treatment of musculoskeletal disorders, and in particular chronic pain in animals.

Anicare vet Mary Geary has trained with the Association of British Veterinary Acupuncturists (http://www.abva.co.uk/) which is affiliated with the British Small Animal Veterinary Association (BSAVA).  Mary provides veterinary acupuncture treatment using the Western Scientific Approach in Botanic Veterinary Hospital in Glasnevin.
